Year 12 Work Experience – Blog by Amy-Kate Colman

Target was kind enough to allow me to work with them for a week for my work experience. I knew nothing about what Target did, what it was like or what kind of hours a normal working day looked like. But by the end of the first day I’d decided that if I was going to work in an office when I was older, that is the kind of atmosphere and people that I would want to be around.

When I first entered the building on the Monday at 9 o’clock in the morning, when my first day was due to start, I was greeted with smiles and welcomes. Friendly faces ready to help should I need it. The work they gave me to do on the first day, wasn’t just something that would just help me for this week, but also for my CV’s and my Uni applications, as well as in my personal life due to them being around safety on the Internet, the rules surrounding people’s data and how to minimise hackers success with passwords.

I also had the opportunity to speak and watch some of the team work, explaining to me what they did and how they did it. Giving me a taster into a day working at Target, some of these jobs I didn’t even know existed and was extremely excited to learn and watch how they did it. Every employee was enthusiastic about what they did, and each of them are very good at their jobs. The informal feeling of the office set such a relaxing atmosphere in what sometimes can be very stressful situations, that it was understandable why people loved working here.

I had the privilege of being able to speak and do a presentation to Lisa, the Managing Director of Target and mypensionID. Your company is amazing, and you are the powerhouse behind it all. A role-model for anyone who is looking to begin a business not for their gain but for others, and that needs to be recognised, especially when this has been passed down from your mother and you have expanded it into the thriving business it is today! And thank you for taking time out of your day for me. Your team is amazing and hard-working, each one of them wanting and thriving to do their best, pushing themselves above their limits to help this company.

I want to thank everyone at Target for making the week memorable and for putting up with me 😊 I loved every second, thank you especially to everyone that took time out of their day to come and show me what they did, to answer my questions. You each said that you loved the family feel that you have as a company and anyone who comes in can easily see that. Well done for everything you do even when it’s stressful and hot (and when the printer breaks 😉) hopefully see some of you soon!
